[edit] Plot
Rory starts her junior year at Chilton. Paris is editor of the school newspaper The Franklin, and she is determined to make Rory's life miserable. When Rory tries to make peace with Paris, Paris tells her an incorrect time for the meeting. By the time Rory gets to the meeting, the only article available is about the repaving of the faculty parking lot. She winds up writing an excellent article and is singled out for praise by Mrs. O'Malley. In retaliation, since Paris had witnessed an awkward encounter between Rory and Mr. Medina, Paris assigns her to interview him. The interview actually goes well because it gives Rory and Mr. Medina their first chance to talk since the broken engagement.
Luke's sister Liz is having trouble with her 17-year-old son Jess, so she sends him to live with Luke. Lorelai warns Luke that taking care of Jess will not be easy, but he is confident that he can handle it. Jess turns out to be taciturn and resentful of being sent to Stars Hollow. Lorelai invites Luke and Jess to have dinner with her, Rory, Sookie, and Jackson, but Jess bails on the evening after an angry confrontation with Lorelai. Lorelai tries to talk to Luke about Jess, but they only wind up arguing.
Luke starts to realize that he has gotten in over his head after Jess is accused of stealing money from Doose's Market and taking a gnome from Babette's garden. He tries to talk to Jess, but he gets so frustrated with Jess that he winds up pushing him into a lake. Afterwards, Luke goes to Lorelai's and admits that she was right. He gives Jess a new set of rules, which ends with Jess' storming out of the apartment.
In the center of town, Jess runs into Rory and returns a copy of Howl that he had borrowed from her room. In it he had written notes in the margin, and he confesses to having read it many times.
