Nial Djuliarso

Nial Radhitia Djuliarso (Born February 5, 1981) is an Indonesian jazz pianist.

Born in Jakarta, Nial started taking piano lesson from an early age of 2.5 years.

Nial was introduced to Jazz music by his father, Tripudjo Djuliarso, who plays bass. In the house he heard a lot of jazz from his father's jazz collection. After watching Pat Metheny Group concert in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1995, Nial became interested in Jazz.

When Nial attended high school in Chattanooga, TN, he continued to learn Jazz Piano. In Chattanooga he played frequently in the Jazz Junction, a local jazz club and where he became a well-known pianist before he graduated in 1999. At that time, he went to actively seeking jazz piano knowledge from many different jazz musician, including Ellis Marsalis, by sending the recording of his music in order to be accepted to masterclasses by those renowned musicians.

Upon finishing high school, he continued to study in Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated with Bachelor of Music degree in 2004, majoring in Contemporary Writing and Production, as well as Performance.

In March 2004, Nial was invited to audition for the Juilliard school jazz studies program and was accepted. Nial started at Juilliard in September 2004 and he is currently in his second year.

  • Winner of 1999 Piano Jazz Improvisation Competition at Oberlin Conservatory
  • 1st place at the 2003 Horace Silver piano competition
  • 3rd place at the 2005 Montreux solo jazz piano competition
  • 3rd place at the 2005 Moscow jazz piano competition.
  • 3rd place at the 2005 USA Songwriting Competition
