Niagara Parkway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niagara Parkway is a road along the Niagara River from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie.

The road is a scenic route from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Table Rock, Niagara Falls.

The route is a two-lane minor arterial road for most of the route and traffic lights are mostly along the falls sections with a 60 km/h (40 mph) speed limit.

Originally built in 1912 and extended in 1936 with a total length of 56 km (35 miles).

The Parkway falls under the jurisdiction of the Niagara Parks Commission for most of its length. Most notably, the section running from the abutment of the Rainbow Bridge to the Whirlpool Aero Car belongs to the City of Niagara Falls and is called River Road for this stretch.

A popular local tale is that Sir Winston Churchill, after having been driven down the parkway, called it "the prettiest Sunday drive in the World."
