Nièvre was one of the original 83 départements created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the former province of Nivernais.

Nièvre is part of the current région of Bourgogne, although historically it was not part of the province of Burgundy, and it is surrounded by the départements of Yonne, Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire, Allier, Cher, and Loiret.
