William Herschel discovered this Tauran nebula surrounding a bright central star on the 13th of November 1790. The discovery reinforced Herschel's belief in the gaseous nature of nebulae. It also influenced him to propose a theory on the interaction between nebulas and stars.
It has since been conjectured that the nebula in fact envelops a tightly orbiting double star with a period of up to 10 days. Gas is presumably expanding away from the larger star of the pair.
