Ngati Te Kanawa

Ngati Te Kanawa is an iwi based in the Waikato-Waitomo region of New Zealand's North Island. It is one of the four main Iwi of the Ngati Maniapoto confederation, which came into existence around 1860.
Ngati Te Kanawa trace their whakapapa to the Tupuna (ancestor) Te Kanawa, who was the great-great-great grandson of the Tupuna Maniapoto.
Ngati Te Kanawa, Ngati Peehi, Ngati Kinohaku and Ngati Huiao are the four main iwi of Ngati Maniapoto whaanui katoa or Ngati Maniapoto confederation. All four Iwi belong to Te Kauae marae in Hangatiki which is the oldest Ngati Maniapoto Marae. These iwi became a confederation in the 1850s to 1880s. There is no Ngati Maniapoto Iwi as such, but there is a Ngati Rora Hapu.
Ue Kaha and Ruapuhaa are direct descendents and Hapu to Te Kanawa of Ngati Te Kanawa.
Ngati Te Kanawa is a Hapu of Ngati Kinohaku.
The families who carry the name Te Kanawa today do not have direct blue blood line whakapapa to the Tupuna Te Kanawa of Ngati Te Kanawa. The families who carry the name Te Kanawa today whakapapa back to Te Kanawa Whero or Te Kanawa Pango.
