The 17th federal election will be the next election to occur in the Federal Republic of Germany. Assuming the current Bundestag remains in office for the typical four years, it will likely occur in late 2009.

At present, information pertaining to the identity of the candidates for the major parties is merely speculative; however, it is agreed amongst many political experts that the candidate for the CDU/CSU should be present Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the candidate for the SPD will be current party chairman, Kurt Beck. However, Chancellor Merkel may receive a challenge from her own party; such a challenge may come from Christian Wulff or Roland Koch.
