In 1959, the "Ascended Masters" contacted Benjamin Creme — an obscure English painter who dabbled in the occult — Creme was told to perform a mission: the advancement of the Masters' plan for humanity. Creme was instructed to prepare the way for one Lord Maitreya — a Master and self-proclaimed christ who would soon begin to assume a human form to begin preparing humanity for the Age of Aquarius. The Aquarian Age would be a time of peace, plenty, perfect equality, and global governance under the Masters, via the United Nations.
