Newtown High School

Newtown High School is a public school in Newtown, Connecticut. This school currently serves about 1,710 9-12 grade students, as of 2005. Newtown High is accredited, it was awarded by the federal government with the Blue Ribbon Award for being a school of excellence in 2001. [citation needed]

Athletically the school provides a wide range of sports from football to track and field. The Boys and Girls Soccer teams captured state titles in 2004. The Boys Cross Country team were the 2005 State Open champions. Boys Cross Country has the best record at the school.The Girls Cross Country team has been league Champions for 5 consecutive seasons (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006). The Girls Swim team is currently in their third undefeated season, and recently placed first in their SWC championships. The Girl's track team has also completed their 4th undefeated season. Also, the Newtown High School Marching Nighthawks went undefeated in their 2005-2006 season.[citation needed] The school mascot, formerly the Indians, was changed in 1996 to the Nighthawks.

Some of the well known alumni from this school include Bruce Jenner, famous track & field gold medal Olympian whom their stadium is named after. Mr Jenner lived in Newtown for a short period of time and did not acknowledge the school after naming their field after him. He has since come to visit since he left the school.
[edit] Renovations
In 1997 the school went under a major reconstruction with a large 250,000 square foot addition added to the eastern side of the school. A new track and football field was constructed and extra seating was put into place. The reconstruction finished by January of 1998 and the school was fully open. In 2004 the fields in the back of the school went under some changes as well to make for more room for athletic fields. The school also boasts having the largest auditorium of any school in the state with a seating capacity of over 1200 people.
