News 12 is the name of seven regional television news channels in the New York City metropolitan area. The channels operate from five independent newsrooms, each with its own editorial staff, studio space and unique slate of on-air personalities. The channels share a common "News 12" graphic look and the tagline "As Local As Local News Gets."

[edit] The Channels
- News 12 New Jersey is the largest of the channels in terms of potential viewership, reaching about 1.8 million homes or about 4.5 million individual viewers in 14 counties in northern and central New Jersey. The channel was launched in 1996, with its central studio-office complex in Edison, New Jersey, and remote bureaus in Madison, Oakland, Newark, Trenton and Wall Township. The channel produces half-hour newscasts 24-hours a day in a single anchor format. Weather reports are featured every 10 minutes beginning at one minute past the hour under the brand “Weather on the 1’s.”
- News 12 Long Island, based in Woodbury, New York, was the first of the channels established as a 24-hour/7 days a week operation. Launched in 1986, it was the first regional cable news channel in the United States. The channel reaches about 800,000 homes in Suffolk and Nassau counties.
- News 12 The Bronx, launched in June 1998, reaches more than 260,000 homes in the Bronx borough of New York City. It shares a newsroom and staff with News 12 Brooklyn, which launched in 2005. Unlike other News 12 channels, reporters in these operations tend to be "one-man-bands" who shoot and edit videotape as well as reporting the story and appearing on television.
- News 12 Westchester, based in Yonkers, New York, reaches more than 270,000 homes in suburbs immediately north of New York City. News 12 Hudson Valley shares a newsroom and facilities with the channel. Reporters cover the area between New York City and south of the state capital of Albany.
- News 12 Connecticut, based in Norwalk, reaches about 200,000 homes in and around Fairfield County. It was the first among the channels launched under the “News 12” brand, though it was a few years after the launch of News 12 Long Island before News 12 Connecticut went 24/7 with original programming.
- News 12 Traffic and Weather was formerly known as Metro Traffic and Weather. It was rebranded with the discontinuation of the MSG Metro Channels.
- News 12 Interactive, based in Woodbury, New York, manages the website news12.com and the iO (interactive Optimum) news, weather and extra features provided on Cablevision's digital platform. News 12 Interactive also operates the InfoBar, a rolling display with time, temperature, weather conditions and news items in the lower portion of the screen during virtually all of the programming of the seven News 12 channels (except News 12 Traffic and Weather).

[edit] Trivia
- Network head Pat Dolan stirred up a media controversy in the weeks following the September 11th attacks, issuing a company policy against anchors and reporters wearing flag pins or showing overt patriotism. The policy was revoked after widespread national criticism.
- Pat Dolan is also an infrequent on-air reporter for the network, having worked as a reporter in the New York media market before News 12's founding.
- Anchor-reporter Trish Bergin was working at News 12 Long island while involved in a highly-publicized romantic relationship with entertainer Billy Joel, a match initiated by Joel's ex-wife Christie Brinkley.
- News 12 Long Island once employed Sy Kravitz, father of musician Lenny Kravitz, and one time husband to his mother, actress Roxie Roker.
- In contrast to most New York market news outlets, News 12 employees are not unionized. An effort to organize in this way during the early 1990s was dropped after widespread staff firings.
