Newport Transport

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Newport Transport is the main provider of bus services in the city of Newport, United Kingdom, under the brand "Newport Bus". Formerly a council department, it came into being as a separate corporate entity in 1986, following the Transport Act 1985. Newport City Council is the only shareholder, which makes it one of the few remaining municipal bus companies in the country.

[edit] Operations

Newport's current fleet consists of mainly single-deck vehicles, some of which are low-floor. There are a few double-deck vehicles remaining which are normally used on services 2D/2X to Caerleon, 47 and 54 to St Josephs RC High School in Duffryn, and 30/30D to Cardiff. Newport Transport's midibus fleet are known as "Newport Nipper". The original pre-war livery of maroon was changed to green and cream in the 1940s and has remained the same ever since, although there are a few exceptions: The company runs several high quality large-capacity school coaches branded as "Skool Coach" that are painted in all-over yellow, mimicking those used in North America. In the summer months, Newport Transport also operate the red-liveried open-top bus tour of the city under the City Sightseeing branding.

The company operates an exact fare policy on its routes and has only recently introduced return tickets.

The company currently employs 230 staff and is based on Corporation Road. As the company operates at "arms length" from the council, it competes with other local operators for Local Authority Tendered bus services.
