Newport Harbor High School was founded in 1930. Since then it has grown to include more than 2,400 students. One of the most famous structures at Newport Harbor is the Belltower, constructed in 1941. In 2003, Robins-Loats Hall was closed due to seismic safety concerns. This building held the landmark bell tower, as well as housed the library, science department, theater, drama department, music department, food services, historical museum (Heritage Hall) and administration offices. The replacement building is scheduled to begin construction in summer 2007. The architects stayed true to the original façade in the design of the new building, yet the interior will have dramatically improved function.

In a recent student interview, Tim Marsh, the district’s Executive Director of Maintenance and Operations, addressed questions regarding the reconstruction project:

1. How much money is it going to take to completely renovate Robins Hall?
The budget for the construction is $35 million dollars.

2. How much of the money spent on reopening Robins Hall was given to us by Measure A and Measure F?
The Measure A contribution is $2.7 million. That is equal to the amount of funds it would have taken to make the existing building meet the design criteria of Measure A. The Measure F contribution is $35 Million.

3. When will the construction process begin?
There will be work this school year to remove some utilities that serve other buildings such as the boilers from the basement of the building. The construction of on Robins-Loats should begin on the first day of summer of 2007.

4. When will Robins officially open for classes again?
The construction schedule will be set after the contractor is on board. However the estimated construction period is 20 months.

5. What are some new things featured in the new plan that were not in Robins Hall before?
The utilities in the building will be able to support modern teaching technology, such as computers in class rooms, a new library and science labs. The building will meet the modern earthquake codes and meet modern accessibility codes.

6. Is there anything special about the process, or the plan, that you would like the students and teachers to know about?
There has been great effort to have the new facility emulate many of the architectural features of the existing structure while still meeting modern codes. [1]

[edit] Athletics

Newport Harbor High School has one of the most respected athletic programs in Orange County, with its water polo and football teams frequently part of the county's elite. They currently compete in the Sunset League of the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section. NHHS teams are known as the Sailors, though fans also refer to them as the "Tars". The school colors are blue and gray.

[edit] Popular culture

As with Orange County, Newport Harbor has experienced some mention in popular culture. Perhaps the most well known reference to Harbor was in the 2003 FOX television series, The OC. The characters in the series attend a school called Newport Harbor, although their school bears very little resemblance to Newport Harbor itself.
