Newport Free Grammar School

Newport Free Grammar School, in Essex, south-east England was founded in 1588, (the same year as the Spanish Armada sailed against England) by Dame Joyce Frankland. It is in Newport, a village of some 3,000 inhabitants near Saffron Walden in Essex, England. Despite its name, the school is now a comprehensive school, but has previously existed in numerous forms, such as a boarding school and a grammar school, requiring prospective pupils to sit an 11-Plus exam to gain entry. The school achieved Specialist Language College status in July 2003.
Former pupils have included Martin Caton, the MP for Gower, Jamie Oliver the naked chef, Republic of Ireland footballer Matt Holland and Paul Simpson, former American Football player for the Enfield Bullets, London Capitals, Great Britain Crusaders, Essex Spartans and Delft Dragons (The Netherlands) and is currently a Map Tester for TomTom in Amsterdam.
