Newfoundlander

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Newfoundlander - A resident of Newfoundland. The term Newfie is also used among Newfoundlanders to refer to themselves. In the mouth of a friend, Newfoundlander or otherwise, 'Newfie' can be a friendly term of endearment. In the mouth of own whose mind is full of scorn for all things Newfoundland (or even just someone who is totally ignorant of all things of Newfoundland) it is, like many such terms, derogatory and offensive. For a similar if more extreme example, one could refer to the black in-culture reclaiming the word nigger.
Newfoundlanders are from and/or of the island and feel some connection to the place whether it be by birth, marriage or having moved here. They are from virtually all countries and nations of the world, speak a plethora or languages and dialects but share one common feeling of connection to the beautiful island of Newfoundland which they call home.

Prior to 2001, the term was also used to apply to Labradorians but with the adoption of the official provincial name as Newfoundland and Labrador, this has fallen out of fashion.
