Newer Technology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Newer Technology is a company that was well known in the Mac community for making upgrades and peripherals for the Apple Macintosh computer. They went bankrupt at the end of 2000 and the company was dissolved, but the name and remaining intellectual property was bought afterwards and used by a new owner.
The following is part of the company background from their website prior to their closure.
Newer Technology, worldwide CPU upgrade market leader, provides superior quality engineering solutions to computer users seeking affordable options for expanding the capability and productivity of their current computer systems through enhanced performance.
Founded in 1984, Newer Technology, Inc. led the market by being first in the industry to develop and sell memory products for the Apple PowerBook and Macintosh computer lines. Even before Apple used Newer Technology memory modules in its first PowerBook demonstrations in 1991, Newer had an established reputation for delivering only the highest quality products. This stellar reputation proved to be a key factor when management was faced with overcoming the market challenges ahead.
As RAM prices plummeted overnight in the early 1990s, Newer's management team realized the company would need to change course quickly and immediately began focusing on developing and diversifying its engineering team. Thrusting the company into the acceleration and peripheral product market, management was able to capitalize on Newer's reputation to transition and emerge as the undisputed leader in the processor upgrade category for Mac OS-based systems and PowerBooks.
When Apple Computer's market share dwindled to a mere 3% in the mid '90s and the clone market came to a screeching halt, Newer weathered the bleak market conditions and dismal sales forecasts thanks to its position as an established industry leader. In fact, Newer prevailed at a time when the public was uncertain about Apple's position in the industry and became leery of purchasing new Apple systems and products. Many Apple loyalists remained faithful to the platform by choosing to buy Newer upgrade products to keep their systems running optimally.
With the June 2002 introduction of the industry's first G4 Pismo processor upgrade, Newer Technology, also known as NewerTech, re-establishes its reputation of being an industry leading, high performance upgrades and accessories manufacturer for Macintosh desktop computers, PowerBooks, iMacs, Intel-based Macintosh computers, and iPods.
2003 saw NewerTech create a new brand and product line, NuPower® Lithium Ion batteries for PowerBook G3 and G4 models. These batteries established the NuPower brand name as the highest capacity replacement batteries available.
In July 2005, NewerTech branches out into a new product category - external storage solutions - by unveiling the miniStack™. This compact hard drive/port hub gives Macintosh mini owners external hard drive space from 80-400GB, faster storage performance, and more FireWire® and USB ports. The product is well received and earns multiple industry awards and accolades – MacAddict Editor’s Choice, MacWorld Top Product, 123macmini Accessory of the Year.
NewerTech returned to its roots in 2006 while also expanding its Macintosh and iPod accessories product line. The MAXPower name is resurrected for a new line of single and dual processor upgrades for the PowerMac G4 that doubles or triples performance, increases universal software compatibility, and allows use of applications that require a higher speed processor over the factory stock speed. The NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter is developed to allow users to externally connect hard drives and optical drives to Macintosh or Windows-based computers.
To help iPod 4G 40GB and all iPod Photo model owners get the most out of their players, NewerTech starts shipping a NuPower Lithium-Polymer replacement battery that delivers up to 114% more runtime than the original stock Apple battery.
2006 also sees NewerTech launch a free return label recycling program for its NuPower PowerBook and iBook batteries as well as meeting RoHS compliant standards for all NuPower iPod replacement batteries and for various PowerBook and iBook batteries.
