Newcastle Rugby League

The Newcastle Rugby League is a rugby league competition in Newcastle, Australia. It is one of the oldest rugby league competitions in Australia, founded in 1910. A Newcastle team competed in the inaugural New South Wales Rugby League premiership of 1908 but withdrew after the 1909 season to form the local competition. The four original teams were Central Newcastle, Northern Suburbs, South Newcastle and Western Suburbs.[1]

- Macquarie United Scorpions (formerly Toronto). Established:1960; Premierships:(1)1991
- Maitland Pickers (formerly Pumpkinpickers)
- Nelson Bay Blues (formerly Northern Suburbs). Premierships:(1)2005
- Raymond Terrace Magpies
- South Newcastle Lions. Established:1910
- Western Suburbs Rosellas. Established:1910; Premierships: (18)1912,1915,1916,1922,1961,1966,1970,1978,1980,1981,1982,1984,1992,1997,1998,1999,2002,2004
- Wyong Kangaroos (also compete in the Central Coast Rugby League competition)
Former clubs include:
- East Newcastle (joined in 1912 but was kicked out in 1942)
- Morpeth-East Maitland (merged with Maitland Utd in 1942 to form the Pumpkinpickers)
- Waratah-Mayfield Cheetahs (still playing in junior competitions).
