Newcastle Airport Metro station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Newcastle Airport Metro station connects Newcastle Airport to Newcastle and Sunderland city centres by the green line of the Tyne and Wear Metro. The journey time to Newcastle Central Station is 24 minutes and Sunderland can be reached in 50 minutes using the same line.

On the Metro Map, the station is known as "Airport" and not "Newcastle Airport" as some might expect. Airport consists of an island platform with a walkway tunnel connecting it directly to the airport interior. The station was not part of the original Metro network however, the station appeared on a preliminary map entitled "Possible extensions to the Metro system" in 1978 and again in a revised map in 1979.

Before Metro was finally extended to Airport passengers would have to alight at Bank Foot and take the M77 bus shuttle there. The bus service became defunct just before the extension was opened.

As well as Airport, Callerton Parkway opened on the extension too. Callerton Parkway is the intermittent station between Airport and Bank Foot. The station was built for a new 1 Zone shuttle service to Airport. Passengers can park their car and ride on Metro to the Airport in one go. As you are travelling through 1 Zone only, a single adult ticket is £1.30. A return ticket for 1 Zone is unavailable on Metro, instead Metro have introduced the 1 Zone Hopper ticket which permits you to travel through 1 zone as many times as you wish during a day.
