Newcastle-under-Lyme School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Newcastle-under-Lyme School is an independent school in the town of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, England.

It was established in the town in the seventeenth century.

Motto: Nunquam Non Nova, Summa Sequendo (Never not new, Strive for the Highest)

The present day Newcastle-under-Lyme School is the product of an amalgamation between the old Newcastle High School and the Orme Girls' School. Today, the school consists of a nursery, a preparatory department, the senior school and the sixth form.

It is a member the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC), an association of the head teachers of the leading day and boarding independent schools in the United Kingdom. Membership of the HMC is often considered as what defines a school as a public school in England or Wales, placing it amongst the more prestigious private schools. [1]

The school itself is situated in the grounds of St.Giles Roman Catholic Church which is famous for being the last church in England to still allow priests to get married. Further, it is one of the only churches in the country to still acknowledge John's Gospel. Such archaic behaviour is reflected also in the school itself, which was the penultimate school to abolish intra-school corporal punishment for offences as minor as forgetting to refer to a teacher as 'sir' (this extended to female staff as well).

Both The Times and The Independent include Newcastle-under-Lyme School in their listings of the Country's Top 50 Independent Schools. In terms of A-level results it is the top performing School across South Cheshire, Shropshire, Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire.
