[edit] Route description

The actual western terminus is located at the point where the onramp for I-490 westbound from exits 24 and 25 merges with I-490 near exit 24 in Pittsford. Heading westbound, the final reference marker is located roughly 200 yards east of where the I-490 westbound onramp from West Commercial Street merges into I-490 west. Eastbound, the first reference marker is not found until the 500 block of West Commercial between Forest Road and McKinley Street, far from its actual starting point where the on-ramp from I-490 eastbound (originating from exit 24) meets the on-ramp from I-490 westbound and NY 31F, which stems from exit 25. This rare setup is caused by the lack of an exit 24 on I-490 westbound.

Heading east from I-490, NY 940U enters East Rochester and becomes West Commercial Street. This name follows NY 940U along its complete length to NY 153, where the 940U designation comes to an end. West Commercial Street, however, continues east into the heart of the village.

[edit] Miscellanea

Prior to an October 2006 road rehabilitation project, only two reference markers, both in rough shape and all but unreadable, existed on West Commercial Street. As part of the construction, new reference markers were added along the full length of Commercial, replacing the two preexisting markers in the process.
