[edit] Route description

Once as long as 35 miles, the present NY 88 is just over 20 miles in length and spends most of its time in Wayne County.

[edit] Ontario County

The southern terminus of NY 88 is located at an intersection with NY 96 on the western edge of the village of Phelps. Just to the north of this location, NY 88 passes under the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90). The route then curves to the northwest before returning northward as it enters Wayne County.

[edit] Wayne County

In the city of Newark, NY 88 takes on the name Main Street. In the center of the city, NY 88 intersects NY 31. Proceeding north, route 88 crosses over the Erie Canal, as well as the CSX Rochester Subdivision as it exits Newark.

Between Newark and Sodus, NY 88 swerves to the west and east as it navigates the hilly Wayne County terrain, passing through the locales of Mud Mills and Fairville in the process.

Upon entering Sodus, NY 88 becomes Carlton Street. At an intersection with West Main Street (part of the Old Ridge Road), NY 88 turns west and follows West Main out of Sodus. Ridge Road separates from NY 88 just outside of Sodus, leaving NY 88 unnamed for a short distance between Ridge Road and its northern terminus at NY 104.

[edit] History

NY 88 originally continued south from its current southern terminus in Phelps to the city of Canandaigua. Route 88 duplexed with NY 96 west to what is now NY 488. NY 88 followed the length of route 488 to NY 21 near Canandaigua, where it duplexed with NY 21 south into Canandaigua to the former terminus of NY 88 at NY 332.
