New York State Route 79 is a west-east New York State route that starts in the Finger Lakes region, runs through Central New York and ends on the western fringes of the Catskills. Its eastern terminus is located at the Pennsylvania state line in the town of Windsor in Broome County. Its western terminus is located at its junction with NY-414 at the southern end of Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen.

It is signed east-west, but from Whitney Point to the state line it runs in a north-south orientation.

From the PA border to the town of Colesville, NY-79 runs along the western bank of the Susquehanna River. Between Chenango Forks and Whitney Point, it runs along the eastern bank of the Tioughnioga River.

In Broome County it goes through Ouaquaga, originally a large Iroquois village which was destroyed by the Continental Army in 1778.

Communities along its route include the villages of Windsor, Whitney Point, Lisle, Burdett, and Watkins Glen, as well as the city of Ithaca.
