[edit] Route description
[edit] Ontario County
NY 318 begins at NY 14 at the same intersection that links NY 14 to the New York State Thruway. After just 0.7 miles, NY 318 crosses into Seneca County.
[edit] Seneca County
Heading east, NY 318 parallels the Thruway for 6.7 miles between NY 14 in Phelps and New York State Route 414 in the Seneca Falls hamlet of Magee, passing the Waterloo Premium Outlets, one of the largest shopping centers in Western New York, before curving to the southeast to arrive at its eastern terminus at US 20 and NY 5 in the town of Seneca Falls.

[edit] History
Previously, the portion of NY 318 from NY 14 to Seneca CR 101, as well as CR 101 south to US 20 and NY 5, was known as NY-390. This designation was reassigned in 1980 to the superhighway continuation of Interstate 390 north of Interstate 490 in Rochester.[2]
NY 318 also had a previous alignment, running between NY-12 and NY-12D along what is now CR 39 in Lewis County near Port Leyden.
It is unclear when the highway in Ontario and Seneca Counties lost the NY 390 designation and became NY 318.
The remaining portion of what is now NY 318 (between Seneca CR 101 and NY 5/US 20/NY 89) was once known as New York State Route 390A. This was likely decommissioned concurrent to the assignment of NY 318 to what was NY 390.
[edit] Miscellanea
Due to the alignment of NY 318 between NY 14 and NY 414 (exits 42 and 41 on the Thruway, respectively), the road is popular as a shunpike, particularly among commuters traveling east along the Thruway and destined for Waterloo, Clyde, Seneca Falls, or the shopping center.
