New York State Route 290, located entirely within Onondaga County, runs from downtown Syracuse to the east side of the county. It provides access to Green Lakes State Park from the north.

The number of the highway is derived from the longstanding plans to extend Interstate 690 east from its current eastern terminus at Interstate 481 to Manlius or even Chittenango. Since NY 690, the logical choice for the route designation, has already been assigned to the extension of I-690 that continues from the western terminus north to Baldswinsville, a different number would be needed. NY 290 was chosen as there are no plans to extend Interstate 290 north of Buffalo.

NY 290 is one of several state highways linking Syracuse and its eastern suburbs.
