New York State Route 15 is a major north-south running highway in Western New York. This route, formerly part of U.S. Route 15, runs for nearly 88 miles between its southern terminus on the Southern Tier Expressway (I-86 and NY-17) at the current northern terminus of US 15 in Painted Post and its northern terminus at NY-31 in downtown Rochester.

[edit] Route description

NY 15 is 87 miles in length, traversing three counties, Steuben, Livingston and Monroe, in western New York.

[edit] Steuben County

Beginning at the southern terminus of NY 15, the route travels westward on the Southern Tier Expressway, forming a triplex with I-86 and NY 17 for 24 miles before exiting the S.T.E. at exit 36 and forming a 17 mile duplex with I-390. This duplex comes to an end at I-390 exit three, where NY 15 exits to join NY-21 for yet another concurrency, this one for two miles into the town of Wayland. NY 21 then turns to the east at an intersection that also features the southern terminus of NY-63, freeing NY 15 from concurrencies until the town of Livonia. North of Wayland, NY 15 crosses into Livingston County.

[edit] Livingston County

NY 15 continues north out of Wayland, eventually reaching Springwater, where NY-15A branches off of NY 15, paralleling the route until the two meet again in Rochester. NY 15 then turns west, snaking its way northwest through the hills of the Southern Tier, passing through Conesus before intersecting US 20A in Livonia. The two routes then continue on a 2.5 mile duplex to the west (NY 15's fourth concurrency) until the town of Lakeville, where US 20A continues west towards Buffalo while NY 15 turns north towards Rochester.

Just north of Lakeville, NY 15 comes into contact with I-390 once again, this time at exit nine. Farther to the north, in Avon, NY 15 intersects NY-5 and US 20 just before entering Monroe County.

[edit] Monroe County

Across the county line, NY 15 maintains a close distance to I-390, crossing over the Interstate and interchanging with it once again (with NY-251 at exit 11). North of the interchange in West Henrietta, NY 15 takes part in its fifth and final concurrency as NY-253 joins NY 15 for one mile across I-90 and the New York State Thruway before turning to the east towards Mendon. Continuing towards Rochester, NY 15 intersects NY-252 at a grade-separated interchange in Henrietta, passing through the most commercial area in the county in the process.

Entering the city of Rochester, NY 15 meets I-390 for the final time at exit 16. Just north of the exit ramps, NY 15A rejoins NY 15. NY 15 then follows Mt. Hope Avenue into downtown Rochester, crossing onto Byron Street at the end of Mt. Hope Avenue then turning north onto Clinton Avenue, passing over I-490 and the Inner Loop before reaching its northern terminus at the intersection of South Clinton Avenue and Woodbury Blvd. (NY 31) in downtown Rochester. As a side note, NY 31 then continues north on Clinton for a short length, allowing Clinton Avenue to maintain state-route status.

[edit] History

Most of what is now NY 15 was originally part of US 15 prior to 1974, when US 15 was truncated to its present northern terminus. The section between I-390 in Wayland and NY 31 in Rochester was part of this original alignment. However, from I-390 south to US 15 in Painted Post, the original alignment follows NY-415.

Some authentic US 15 shields can still be found along NY 15, particularly in downtown Rochester.
