New York Rapid Transit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New York Rapid Transit Corporation (NYRT) was the railroad operating company of the subway and elevated railway lines of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT).
It was formed as a result of the restructuring from bankruptcy of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company (BRT) into the BMT. It was successor to the two rapid transit operating companies of the former BRT, the New York Consolidated Railroad (NYCRR), operator of the elevated division lines, and the New York Municipal Railway (NYM), operating of the subway division lines.
The NYRT ceased its role as an operating company in 1940, when the BMT was acquired by the City of New York.
