The New York Rangers (NYR) are a professional ice hockey team based in New York City, New York, U.S.A.. They play in the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Rangers and their local rivals, the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils, are all members of the NHL's Atlantic Division, guaranteeing plenty of regular season meetings. This is unique among New York City's major league sports teams; Major League Baseball's New York Yankees and New York Mets are in different leagues although they play more now due to interleague competition, and the National Football League's New York Jets and New York Giants are in different conferences, giving them little opportunity to play each other. This allows the Rangers to maintain a great rivalry between Tri-State area area teams.

[edit] Franchise history
The New York Rangers are one of the Original Six NHL teams and have won four Stanley Cups (NHL championships), the most famous of which was probably the win in 1994, which ended a 54-year drought which some fans attributed to the Curse of 1940. However, they could not maintain this success and missed the playoffs for seven straight seasons from the 1997-98 season until 2006, in which they were swept by their trans-Hudson River rivals, the New Jersey Devils, in the first round, despite having one of their greatest regular seasons in many years. There are some who think having some of their most important players (Jaromir Jagr, Henrik Lundqvist, Martin Straka, Martin Rucinsky, Darius Kasparaitis, Fedor Tyutin, Marek Malik, Michal Rozsival) participate in the 2006 Olympics contributed to their lackluster finish. People often credit them as one of the most positively affected teams by the NHL's rule changes after the 2004 lock-out.
