New York Power Authority
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New York Power Authority (or NYPA) is a New York State public benefit corporation and the largest state-owned power organization in the United States. NYPA provides some of the lowest-cost electricity in New York State, operating 17 generating facilities and more than 1,400 circuit-miles of transmission lines.
The New York Power Authority sells power to government agencies, community-owned electric systems and rural electric cooperatives, companies, private utilities for resale (without profit) to their customers, and to neighboring states, under federal requirements.
Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt established New York's model for public power through legislation signed in 1931. This effort to secure public control of New York's hydropower resources was the result of a bipartisan effort that began with Governor Charles Evans Hughes in 1907.
In November 2000, Entergy Corporation purchased the Fitzpatrick and Indian Point Energy Center Unit 3 nuclear power plants from NYPA.
