New York Film Academy (more commonly known as NYFA) is a privately-owned film school best known for its intensive short term filmmaking courses.
The school was founded in 1992 by Broadway and film producer Jerry Sherlock. Originally located at Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Center, it moved to the former Democratic Convention Center at Union Square in 1994. This building was also the last physical location of the famous New York political machine Tammany Hall.
The school offers filmmaking courses for beginners and graduate students throughout the year, adding summer short-term programs elsewhere, including Harvard University, Princeton University, Florida, Paris and Florence. Their one-year programs, ranging from directing to screenwriting and from cinematography to film editing, are located in New York, Universal Studios, Los Angeles and Bloomsbury, London. Students that have attended the school include Owen Kline (son of Kevin Kline), Max Spielberg (son of Steven Spielberg), Jack Robbins (son of Tim Robbins), and Jane Crawshaw (of Edwards Theatre Co.).
