[edit] History
In the 1980's David Pytches (then Vicar of St. Andrews, Chorleywood) had a longing to see 'the spontaneous expansion' of the church in this country as he had seen it happening in Chile, while Bishop there. Through a growing friendship with John Wimber, the founder of the Vineyard Church in the USA, he realised one of the keys was the equipping of ordinary Christians for ministry through the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit. John visited David's church, and held various public conferences which stirred up great hunger and interest from churches across the nation. David began a series of one day conferences in St Andrew's for church leaders, and, in 1987/8, held residential mid-week conferences at Swanwick. They looked to David for leadership, and to St Andrew's as an example of a local church joyfully transformed by the Holy Spirit and engaging in effective mission in a contemporary way.
[edit] Summer Conferences
[edit] The first "New Wine"
The first conference, held in 1989 at The Royal Bath and West Showground, Somerset, attracted nearly 2,500 people. Since then, it has steadily grown, and by 1993 the youth section had grown so much that Mike Pilavachi had the vision of a separate conference for teenagers, and hence Soul Survivor was born. Numbers grew such that two separate weeks had to be later added.
[edit] History
Over the years, New Wine has attracted many well-known speakers, including: David Carr, J John and Mike Pilavachi. The same can be applied to worship leaders; the past 17 years have seen Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Brian Doerksen and Kathryn Scott lead worship in New Wine's primary venue.
[edit] New Wine North
In 2005, New Wine North began, in Harrogate, with 3,500 delegates attending. 2006 saw a change of venue, to Newark, where 6,500 people were accommodated. New Wine North 2007 is scheduled to remain in Newark.
[edit] Other events
The New Wine organisation also runs many other events during the year, including leadership, ministry, "kid's work" and worship training days, and also short-duration retreats. All these events include spirit-led worship, ministry and teaching.
