New Town is a suburb of the city of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, located about 4 km north of the CBD. One of the city's oldest suburbs, it is now an inner city residential suburb, many of its streets are lined with federation style cottages. It is surrounded by the suburbs of North Hobart, Mt Stuart, Lenah Valley and Moonah, with the Domain just to the south east.
New Town has the only two single-sex public schools in Tasmania - Ogilvie High School, for girls, and New Town High School for boys. The major shopping centre is the Centro New Town, which houses a Kmart, a Coles Supermarket, Video Ezy, and several smaller specialty shops.
The Hobart bike track passes directly through the suburb, on its course from Claremont to the city.
In the 1990s, New Town saw a large increase in the number of Sudanese refugees living in the area.
The main road in New Town is known as "Main Road" and follows on from Elizabeth St in Hobart. The road connects Hobart with the neighbouring city of Glenorchy. Other main roads in New Town are Augusta Road, which leads into Lenah Valley, and Giblin Street which becomes Forster Street, continuing down to the Brooker Highway.
