New Space (Nuevo Espacio) is a social democratic party in Uruguay. It was founded in 1994 by Senator Rafael Michelini. It was born as a split of the People's Government Party (Partido por el Gobierno del Pueblo), whose leader was the former Vice-President Hugo Batalla, when the party decided to join the Colorado Party for the 1993 elections. It obtained one Senator both in 1994 and 1999. In 2001, the New Space decided to join the Broad Front for the 2004 campaign. As a result, there was a new crack in the party's board. The Independent Party emerged, led by Deputy Pablo Mieres. Now, the New Space supports the Government of President Tabaré Vázquez. This party has taken part in the Socialist International since its foundation.
