[edit] History
NUTS was established in 1985 after the dissolution of the previous theatrical society on campus, DramaSoc.
[edit] Shows
NUTS produces, on average, 12 shows each year at various venues on the UNSW campus, primarily Studio One, a black box theatre. Major NUTS productions are staged in the larger Io Myers or Fig Tree Theatres for usually either one or two weeks. Minors are usually one week shows that are staged in Studio One and Mini-Majors are two week shows in Studio One.
The society produces a wide variety of plays each year - some of them written by club members. NUTS also stages two annual short play festival each year, called Domestic and SPASMS.
Domestic is an annual short play festival staged in Session 1 since it began in 2000. Writers are provided with a space and one day in which in write they're scripts. The plays are then cast, rehearsed for a week and then traditionally performed on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights before Good Friday.
SPASMS is an annual short play festival which was first produced in 1995 to coincide with the School of Media, Film and Theatre's second year scriptwriting course. It was created so that aspiring student playwrights could see their scripts performed onstage. Scripts are submitted to the producers, cast and rehearsed, and then staged for one week in a theatre on-campus.
