New Philadelphia, Illinois

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The town of New Philadelphia, Illinois was first town in the United States to have been founded by an African-American. Founded in 1836, by Free Frank McWorter, a freed slave from South Carolina, the town lasted until shortly after 1869 when the railroad bypassed the town, causing the businesses there to relocate and the town to quickly die. On August 11, 2005, the town site was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
