New Left Current (Greek: Νέο Αριστερό Ρεύμα- Neo Aristero Revma) (NAR) was formed in late 1989, mainly by ex-KNE members. The Communist Party of Greece joined New Democracy party in a government coalition after the June 18, 1989 elections, and most of the KNE members left as they disagreed with the policy that CP of Greece had.
NAR, participated in the 1990 elections as Neo Aristero Revma - Laiki Antipoliteusi (Greek: Νέο Αριστερό Ρεύμα - Λαϊκή Αντιπολίτευση) and got 14,365 votes (0,22%). A critical figure of early stage was without doubt Kostas Kappos ex-member of the CP of Greece and parliamentary representative.
In 1993 NAR formed with EKKE, CPG (m-l), Workers Revolutionnary Party (EEK) the Fighting Left (Greek: Μαχόμενη Αριστερά) coalition, which got 8,160 votes in 1993 elections and 10,443 votes in the 1996 ones.
Since 1999, NAR, EKKE, EEK and AKOS founded Radical Left Front.
In the early years NAR's youth wing was still named KNE, as even the general secretary of KNE, Giorgos Grapsas, and most of its politburo joined NAR, but in the mid 90's they changed their name to Youth of Communist Liberation.
