New Laender

In the German reunification in 1990, the federal states of the former German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany. These 5 states (Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thuringia) are called New Laender (or Neue Bundesländer in german).
