New Jersey Route 166

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Route 166 is a 3.73-mile (6.00 km) state highway in New Jersey, United States, providing an alternate route for U.S. Route 9 through Toms River Township (US 9 uses the Garden State Parkway to bypass Toms River). It runs from US 9 in Beachwood north along former US 9 through South Toms River and Toms River Township, ending where US 9 leaves the Parkway north of Toms River.

[edit] History

Route 166 was part of pre-1927 Route 4, taken over in 1920, and kept its number as Route 4 in the 1927 renumbering. The bypass was built ca. 1952, but at first US 9 continued to run through Toms River. In the 1953 renumbering, the current Route 166 officially became part of US 9. By 1960, US 9 had been rerouted onto the Parkway, and the old route became U.S. Highway 9 Alternate. The Route 166 number was assigned by 1976.
