Route 138 is a state highway in the U.S. state of New Jersey that extends 3.52 miles (5.66 km). It is an eastern extension of Interstate 195 towards Belmar. Its western terminus is at Route 34 and Interstate 195 in Wall Township; its eastern terminus is at Route 35 in Wall. It was first built as part of Route 38 in 1941 and renumbered "138" in 1989 when it became clear that the gap between two sections of Route 38 would not be filled. Although Interstate 195 ends at Route 34, Route 138 carries another exit for it (Exit 36). The traffic lights on Route 138 often cause congestion during peak hours because of Route 18's premature ending. The highway is also meant to be an evacuation route in case of a disaster, where the eastbound lanes would be reversed as well as Interstate 195's all the way to the New Jersey Turnpike.
