New Hampshire Route 123

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New Hampshire Route 123 (NH-123) is a secondary north–south highway in southwestern New Hampshire. The highway runs from Walpole on the Connecticut River to Mason on the Massachusetts border.

The southern terminus of Route 123 is at the Massachusetts state line in Mason. At this location the road is locally named Valley Road. The road continues into Massachusetts as an unnumbered local road in the town of Ashby.

The northern terminus of NH-123 is at the junction with NH-12 in Walpole. NH-12 runs north–south alongside the Connecticut River, which is the border between New Hampshire and Vermont. At this location NH-123 is locally named Whitcomb Road. One thing to note here of interest is that for the last mile or so of Route 123, it runs noth-south along the Connecticut River, however, the part that actually is heading south is the direction signed as north, and vice-versa. When you cross the bridge coming from the Vermont side of the river, turning left means you head compass direction north, and it is indeed Route 12 northbound, but because of the odd route 123 takes, it is both 12 North and 123 South at the same time.

In October of 2005, heavy flooding in the New Hampshire area caused the closure of Route 123 in two different spots. The first is at the intersection of 123 and Cold River Road, approximately 5 miles from the beginning of 123 in New Hampshire. This was due to a bridge being destroyed from high water in the Cold River. The marked detour for this closure is to take Upper Walpole Road, which connects back to Route 123 just after the closure. The second spot that is closed to traffic is approximately 3 miles from the junction with New Hampshire Route 123A where they meet in the town of Alstead. This was caused by a section of roadway being completely washed away by the water. The marked detour for this closure is to take Route 123A, in its entirety, and then Route 10 south where 123 meets. Workers continue to make the necessary repairs, but it is unclear how long these will take.

Total length of NH-123 is 59.6 miles (95.8 km).
