New England Interstate Route 24
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New England Interstate Route 24 or NE-24 was a New England Interstate Highway in Maine. The original 1922 plan had NE-24 running for 140 miles from Brunswick, Maine to Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine. The modern designations of the original route are:
- State Route 24 from Brunswick to Gardiner (paralleling I-295)
- U.S. Route 201 from Gardiner to Waterville
- State Route 100 from Waterville to Newport
- State Route 7 from Newport to Dexter
- State Route 23 from Dexter to Sangerville
- State Route 6 from Sangerville to Greenville
By 1925, Maine had transferred the Route 24 designation to a completely new alignment on the eastern edge of the state. The new route ran from Calais, Maine to Madawaska, Maine, at a border crossing with Edmunston, New Brunswick. Today, NE-24 is part of the alignment of U.S. Route 1 in Maine.
