New Dominions

The New Dominions is the oldest student-run, co-ed a-cappella group at the University of Virginia. Founded in 1990 by Burt Kann, the group has established itself in the collegiate a cappella scene and performed for thousands of individuals up and down the East Coast.

At various points in group history, members of the New Dominions have worn vests, black and white (sometimes with varied accessories), modified Superman shirts, and black and blue.

The group has recorded and released eleven albums in its history including: By Default, Salamander, Bon Time, Just a Little Crime, Boxed or Hung?, Whatthehellhappened?, Ten Years Of..., Live and Let Da, Your Mom, and Ya Heard?. The group's most recent album, Almost Awesome, was released on November 11, 2006.

Burt Kann, Curt Alt, Kelly "Vivion" Smith, Kate Cronin, Eric Meade, Jon Provan, John Wertman, Mike Beachy, Abby McDowell, Andrew Manning, and Colin Addis have all served as Music Director of the New Dominions. Smith is now the lead singer and primary music writer for the popular Washington, D.C.-area band Juniper Lane. Provan is lead singer and keyboarist for the up-and-coming band Moyer.

The New Dominions have previously competed in the International Championship of College A Cappella, advancing to the Semifinal round in 1996-97 and 2004-05.
