[edit] High School

The four-year high school program consists of two 2-year blocks: a 9/10 block with a largely common curriculum for all students and an 11/12 block that requires students to achieve credits toward a diploma.

[edit] Outcome-directed

Outcomes (specific statements of expected learning) have been identified in each subject area. These outcomes direct instructional planning and assessment activities.

[edit] A broad common curriculum

Students in Grade 9 take the same subjects. English and Math are taken all year. Social Studies, Science, French, Technology, Physical Education, and Fine Arts are also studied. Grade 10 students may be grouped according to ability in Math and English, and they have some limited choice within the areas of Technology, Physical Education, and Fine Arts. Social Studies, Science, and French are also studied.

[edit] Teaming

Students are taught by a team of teachers who collaboratively plan instruction for their students.

[edit] Student-Centered

Teachers organize instruction into a wide range of activities that recognize the individual strengths and learning styles of the students in their care. It is a cornerstone of the 9/10 program that achievement of outcomes may be demonstrated in many different, and equally valuable, ways.

[edit] Flexible Structure

Schools, and indeed different teams within a school, are given flexibility to schedule instruction in ways that best suit the needs of the students. However, minimum hours of instruction in each subject area are set by the Department of Education. It is also recognized that the amount of time a student spends in grades 9 and 10 might extend beyond two years.

[edit] Varied Assessment

Just as instruction is planned to offer a wide array of approaches to learning, assessment is carried out in an equally wide range of methods – reflecting the teachers’ recognition and acknowledgement of student learning.

[edit] Grade 11&12

The following principles guide the 11/12 program:

[edit] Graduation Credits

In grade 11, students will begin to accumulate credits toward the New Brunswick High School Diploma. Seventeen credits are needed to graduate, including compulsories of: Grade 11 English (full year = 2 credits), Grade 11 Math (one semester = 1 credit), Grade 11 History, a Science course, Grade 12 English, and one course from the Life Role Development cluster.

[edit] Choice

Courses are designated as being at the 0, 1, 2, or 3 level. Those courses designated as 111, 112, 121, or 122 are intended for those students wishing to pursue post-secondary education; while courses bearing a designation of 113 or 123 are often more general in nature. Zero level courses (110 and 120) may be in either category.

A wider array of course choices is available to students in this program than in the 9/10 block. Students are free to choose those courses that interest them and best suit their particular needs (mindful of the compulsory credits listed above). In each of the 4 semesters in the 11/12 program, students will take 5 courses.
