[edit] History

New Alipore was created as a planned residential suburb of the city of Kolkata by the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) in the fifties and sixties to house the burgeoning population of the city looking for more land.

It is one of the better planned & posh areas of the city and is home to a wide variety of people from all walks of life. The eastern part of the area around Tollygunge Circular Road and Mahabirtala is one of the most congested parts of south Kolkata, with offices of large number of transport companies who park their trucks right on the road.

Kalighat railway station has been renamed as New Alipore station, and the erstwhile Kalighat Falta Railway (KFR) has been dismantled and the space reclaimed. The stretch where once the tracks lay is now the James Long Sarani. This road runs parallel to the Diamond Harbour Road and through New Alipore, Behala and Thakurpukur.
