In 2006 the San Francisco 49ers announced a new 68,000 seat, open air stadium to be built in time for the 2012 NFL Season at Candlestick Point in San Francisco.[1], however on November 8th, 2006, the 49ers announced that they have abandoned plans for the new stadium are no longer negotiating for this new stadium with plans to leave San Francisco and move the team to Santa Clara.[2]

The Santa Clara Stadium would be located in the current parking lot of Great America theme park, not far from the 49ers' existing practice facility. The proposed stadium design would be similar to the stadium presented earlier in 2006 for Candlestick Point.

[edit] 2016 Olympic Bid

The Candlestick Point stadium would have also formed the centerpiece of San Francisco's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. When the plans for the new Candlestick Point stadium were dropped, the city abandoned its bid for the 2016 Olympics.
