NewOS
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NewOS is a free operating system, in development, with full source code available, along with periodic binary snapshots. It currently runs on:
- Intel and AMD based single and multiprocessor CPUs
- Sega Dreamcast
- PowerPC based machines (PowerPC G3/PowerPC G4 Macs, Pegasos)
It is loosely based on concepts gleaned from BeOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, Windows NT, and other reasonably modern operating systems. The design goals are to be as modern and complete as possible, with an emphasis on platform portability.
The project's founder and lead developer is a former Be Engineer, Travis Geiselbrecht. NewOS was forked and now forms the base of the Haiku (formerly OpenBeOS) operating system, which seeks to create a BeOS-compatible operating system in an open source format.
