Neville Perkins was secretary (1987-88) of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, New South Wales 1987-88 and was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in the 1990s. He was the first Indigenous person to hold a shadow portfolio, and was appointed deputy leader of the Northern Territory Australian Labor Party.
