Nevada United States Senate election, 2006

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2006 U.S. Senate election for the state of Nevada was held on November 7, 2006.

Incumbent Nevada Senator John Ensign won re-election. As of May 15, 2006, polls show he has an approximate 50% approval rating. Senator Ensign won the August 15, 2006 Republican Party primary with over 90% of the Republican primary vote and 100% of the precincts reporting [1].

Jack Carter, son of former President Jimmy Carter, won the August 15, 2006 Democratic Party primary with over 78% of the Democratic Primary vote and 100% of the precincts reporting [2].

[3] Popular Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman had said in January that he would probably run [4], but in late April seemed to decisively rule that out. [5]. Goodman did not file by the May 12, 2006 deadline.

Carter's advantages include his formidable speaking abilities and kinship with a former U.S. President. On the other hand, Ensign is also considered to be an effective speaker, and as of the first quarter of 2006, held an approximately 5-1 advantage over Carter in cash-on-hand. Also, Ensign's father is connected with the deep-pocketed gaming industry, an important consideration in Nevada.
