Network Compartmentalization, the division of network functionality into network compartments, is an important concept of Autonomic Networking.

A network compartment is a real or virtual object that provides services to other compartments, potentially by harvesting services from other compartments.
- Based on policy, trust, administrative (etc.) domains
- Support of Virtual Compartments (i.e. overlays)
- Support of multi homing (i.e. nodes can be in different compartments)
