NES Max

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NES Max was a gamepad that was released by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. Like many later controllers (such as the PlayStation's and N64's), it had "wings": handles that extend from the edges of the pad, making it more comfortable to hold.

Unlike the standard NES controller, the Max had a small button-shaped item called a cycloid, that could be moved in directions for movement. It functioned similar to a joystick, however, it lacked analog response. The cycloid could be moved by the player's thumb. In theory this sounded good, but the area for the cycloid was very small, and the contours of the 'button' caused discomfort to the bottom of the player's thumb after extended play. If the player opted for more traditional control, the cycloid area was surrounded by an 8-way control pad ring. The controller was smaller in width than a regular controller and was slightly thinner. It also featured turbo "A" and "B" buttons in addition to the standard buttons.

The Max's official Nintendo part number was NES-027.
