Neo-Medieval is a term to describe modern music (Gothic Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and even Industrial Music) that adds elements of Medieval music, Renaissance music, Folk music, and sometimes elements of Western Art Music songs through instrumentation, notation, and renditions of traditional songs. Most artists write their own songs, but they may also do a rendition, or base a song off of a traditional tune. They may also perform a song traditionally. This type of music is gaining a lot of popularity in Europe, as this is where most of these artists are located. Wave Gotik Treffen festival in Germany has been host to Neo-Medieval artists such as In Extremo, Tanzwut, Corvus Corax, Subway to Sally, Arcana, and many more. It’s slowly gaining attention in the states with labels like the Fossil Dungeon, Dancing Ferret’s Noir, Pale Moon Records, Middle Pillar, and Projekt Records releasing Neo-Medieval musik. With such American bands as The Soil Bleeds Black, Todesbonden, Aesma Daeva, Mirabalis, Unto Ashes, and Wulf. The German bagpiper’s Corvus Corax had just performed for the first time in the New World at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.
