[edit] Background
[edit] Development
Nemesis was originally created by the European branch of the Umbrella Corporation which initially spearheaded the “Nemesis Project” during the 1980s. by inserting a specially modified parasitical organism into a host. However, the process was rather unstable, as few specimens possessed DNA that was compatible with the parasite.
In 1988, Albert Wesker, an Umbrella Corporation research scientist, pleaded with Ozwell E. Spencer, the president of the Umbrella Corporation, for a chance to experiment with the parasite. Wesker sinisterly plotted to inject the parasite into Lisa Trevor, a hideous abomination created by years of experimentation. Lisa, a human guinea pig, was injected with various viruses over the past several years, most notably the Progenitor Virus. As observed by Wesker, the parasite traveled to Lisa’s brain, and disappeared, leading them to believe the experiment had failed. Ten years after the experiment, researchers at the Arklay facility noticed a change in Lisa's vital signs. Further investigation had shown the parasite had survived.
Lisa was used for later research, which lead to the development of William Birkin's G-Virus. However, similar to the original parasite, numerous discrepancies began to come about between the parasite and its host. The European branch of the Umbrella solved this problem, by “splicing” the parasite with four Tyrants.
[edit] Birth
The first experiment failed, as the nemesis parasite enabled the host to regain cognitive thinking, and thus allowing it to engineer a plan to escape from the facility where it was being held. Unfortunately, the plan failed, and the Tyrant was destroyed. The second specimen to receive the parasite was also given a plethora of neurological inhibitors to impair the growth of brain cells. The second experiment was successful, and the newly created Nemesis was deployed to Raccoon City to attain test data.
While in the T-Virus infested depths of Raccoon City, Nemesis was ordered to eliminate the remaining members of the city’s Special Tactics And Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.), who had recently discovered the nefarious exploits of the Umbrella Corporation.
[edit] Resident Evil: 3
On September 28, 1998, Nemesis began his relentless head-hunt whilst S.T.A.R.S members combated swarms of “zombies”. Nemesis first encountered Brad Vickers, a S.T.A.R.S helicopter pilot. After a desperate battle, Nemesis managed to kill Brad through a tremendous display of brute force by shoving one of its tentacles through his face. Nemesis went on to stalk protagonist Jill Valentine through the city, eventually leading to a final showdown.
Despite possessing prodigious strength, Nemesis fell prey to the detrimental effects of the virus, which was worsened from venial damage he sustained from small arms fire and an acidic compound used to break down industrial waste. Furthermore, like many organisms subjected to Progenitor based viruses, Nemesis began to mutate into a deadlier creature. The mutations took a bizarre turn, mutating Nemesis into a grotesque blob of flesh and disfigured limbs.
Nemesis refused to let this handicap obstruct him from fulfilling his mission, and continuously pursued Jill. Despite these voracious strives, Jill was able to defeat it by unleashing a lethal blast from a railgun (Code named the 'Parascellus Sword') brought to that area by a failed U.S. Army unit, and several bullets from a .44 Magnum revolver.
While Nemesis failed to accomplish its goal of killing all the remaining S.T.A.R.S member, the very fact that it persistently attacked its targets regardless of the obstacles ahead impressed its researchers. Unlike its counterparts, Nemesis managed to retain its mental stability after undergoing additional mutation. Currently, the two remaining Nemesis Tyrants are unaccounted for, though one is mentioned in the non-canonical Resident Evil: Gun Survivor 2, where it is the last powerhouse defending Rock Fort Island from outside attack.
[edit] Nemesis types
Type 1: The type 1 Nemesis is the one encounter mostly until the Clock Tower/Monorail area of the game. T1 Nemesis is dressed in his full leather longcoat and is often carrying a rocket launcher with 5 shots. After these are shot, he drops it and tends to not use it again later on in the game. He will re-use the face grab attacks and smashes, although it is important to mention Nemesis is more dangerous without the launcher than with it. It must be noted that the movie version was slightly inaccurate: the original game model has a fully white eye and only carries the launcher, as the movie version has both a minigun and the rocket launcher. It also never evolves and seems to be controlled via a computer interface rather than by its given, spoken orders.
Type 2: T2 Nemesis only wears half his coat, which is now torn upwards from the belt level. His torso and arms now have more tentacles growing out of them and the right hand has a constant strand of tentacles coming out. He will usually attack Jill with grabs, smashing her to the floor, leg trips by getting her at the ankle or 180° degree strikes going from his left arc towards the right. He will no longer use the rocket launcher but will also take more punishment before falling.
Type 3: T3 Nemesis is a twisted hulk of flesh, distantly a reminder of the final boss in RE2. The main idea of it is a large dog-shaped monster with large spikes arranged around his head, itself centered on the chest. Two large tentacles are also sprouting from the sides of the head. Smaller ones are spread over the back. The back legs still appear human while the front ones are largelly twisted and over-grown. There also seems to be a hint of a tail. It attacks mainly by lunging at Jill and knocking her down or by spraying acid in front of itself.
[edit] Nemesis-T
In Resident Evil Survivor 2 - Code: Veronica, a newer version of the Nemesis makes an appearance in the game. "Nemesis-T", is the final opponent one will encounter in the game. Unlike its Resident Evil: 3 counterpart, Nemesis-T is invincible, and features translucent orange skin. Nemesis-T was garrisoned on the Umbrella Corporation Rockfort Island facility to help protect the lab in the event of an emergency.
[edit] In other media
- Nemesis was referenced in 2002 in film version of Resident Evil, and also appeared in 2004 film Resident Evil: Apocalypse, where he was portrayed by Matthew G. Taylor. And in the movie, Nemesis was actually Matt Addison.
- A comical rendition Nemesis was featured in the Christmas edition of VG Cats.
